Provincial Narratives of China’s Participation in the First Indochina War, 1949-1954

Nearly two years ago I began to write about the involvement of the People’s Republic of China in the First Indochina War, and today I was finally able to see the fruits of my labor.

“A Border Region ‘Exuded with Militant Friendship’: Provincial Narratives of China’s Participation in the First Indochina War, 1949-1954,” Cold War History 12, no. 3 (August 2012):495-514.

The article grew out of a paper I wrote for a graduate seminar taught by Dr. Shawn McHale in fall 2010. Professor McHale deserves a great deal of credit for this publication–he was genuinely encouraging and yet honest with his criticisms and suggestions. He helped me to connect the dots, and pushed me to think about the subject matter more deeply and critically.
